Toenail Fungus

The most noticeable signs of toenail fungus is a yellowish or brownish discoloration of the nail. Others can develop thickened nails, rough nails, brittle crumbly nails that may break off, musty smell, separation of the nail from the nail bed, and pain and tenderness.

What causes fungal nails?

These are due to a fungus spreading under the nail into the nail bed. There are different types of fungi that can affect the nails. These fungi love humidity and flourish in damp areas of the body, including the toenails. The fungus gets in through the cracks in the nail or cuts in the skin. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding skin and other toenails.

There are different ways to treat toenail fungus, depending on the type of fungus you have and how extensive the infection is. It may be one or a combination of treatments.

To prevent getting an infection, dry your feet thoroughly after bathing, do not share towels, wear flip flops when in public pools, and wearing socks when trying on shoes in shops.

If you have nail fungus, see your podiatrist as soon as you can. The condition is easiest to treat when it has not reached the root of the nail. OTC or over the counter treatments usually only work on superficial infections and may not actually kill the spores. Fungal nail infections can be difficult to cure. See your foot doctor for evaluation and proper treatment.
