What is Flatfoot?

Flat foot is when the entire sole of the foot is in contact with the ground while standing. Although this is a common disorder, it is a complex deformity.

Flat feet may not have any associated problems and treatment may not be necessary. But sometimes, flat feet can be associated with foot pain, ankle pain, as well as pain in the ankles, lower legs, knees, hips, and even the lower back. There can also be associated problems with the muscles, bones, or connective tissues around the feet. Rolled in ankle or overpronation may also be seen.

– if your feet feel weak or numb
– if you notice that your shoes wear out very quickly
– if your feet appear to be getting flatter

If flatfeet is left untreated, the misalignment forces the rest of the body to compensate, thus putting excessive strain on the heels, ankles, knees, hips, and back.

Traditional reconstructive surgery for flat feet is for patients with severe deformity. However, this often requires a long recovery because it involves the cutting and shifting of bones.
