Ingrown toenails can be very painful. This occurs when a sharp corner of the toenail digs into the skin at the side of the toe. The result is pain, swelling, redness, and even a risk for infection. The most commonly affected is the big toe.

Common signs and symptoms

• Redness around the toenail
• Tenderness and pain in the toe along the sides of the nail
• Swelling of the toe around the nail

• Have diabetes or conditions that cause poor blood flow to your feet
• Experience severe pain or redness
• If there is no improvement after three days of home care

How to prevent ingrown toenails

• Trim the nails straight across
• Wear shoes that fit properly
• Avoid trimming the toenails too short
• Check your feet daily especially if you have diabetes

What happens when an ingrown nail is left untreated?

• Can lead to infection of the underlying bone
• Can develop and abscess
