Don’t Have Achilles Tendon Surgery Until You See This

The Achilles tendon attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone. Continuous intense physical activity such as jumping and running can lead to painful inflammation of this tendon, called Achilles tendonitis or tendinitis.

Pain usually begins as a mild ache in the back of the leg or above the heel. Chronic tendon injuries can occur among both athletes and the general population. Often, it interferes with daily activities.

Most cases can be managed with simple home care under your doctor’s supervision. These are mostly directed at preventing recurring episodes.

The severe pain episodes may happen after stair climbing, sprinting, or prolonged running. You can reduce your risk by avoiding activities that place excessive stress on the tendons. If you notice pain during exercise, stop and rest. Start your exercise regimen slowly and gradually increase its duration and intensity. Daily stretches on the calf muscles and Achilles tendon will maintain flexibility to avoid recurrence. Shoes should provide adequate heel cushioning with firm arch support to reduce tension on the Achilles tendon. Worn-out shoes are a no-no.

Imaging tests such as x-rays, ultrasound, and MRI may be done. X-rays can help rule out other conditions that cause similar symptoms. Ultrasound can produce real-time images of the Achilles tendon while MRI can produce detailed images.

Treatments vary. When over the counter medications such as ibuprofen do not relieve symptoms, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications to reduce inflammation and pain. Physical therapy can promote healing and strengthening of the Achilles tendon. Surgery may be recommended by your doctor. However, do not have surgery for Achilles tendon pain until you watch this video.
