Can Bunions and Arthritis Occur Together?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint on the base of the big toe. This happens when the first metatarsal bone of the foot turns outward and the big toe points toward the other toes, causing the joint to jut out. This may start as a minor pain but progressively gets worse. Over time, this leads to inflammation and the entire joint becomes stiff and painful.

Can a bunion and big toe arthritis occur together?

Yes, sometimes arthitis accompanies a bunion. This is because the bunion deformity has become worse due to repetitive trauma or injury. Arthritis can also lead to bunions.

The bunion will not resolve on its own and can only get worse with age. The sooner you get your foot evaluated, the better your chances of a successful outcome.
