Foot Care for the Holidays

The holidays mean shopping, running errands, working, visiting family, and all of the holiday traditions. Unfortunately, all these activities can add up to painful feet. Apply these foot care tips to keep your feet happy and healthy during the holidays.

Wear comfortable shoes: If you have a busy day lined up, it is best to put on a pair of comfy shoes that provide heel and arch support to your feet. Avoid wearing heels for long periods to avoid sore feet.

Watch where you are stepping: Winter season makes paths slippery. Thus, it is important to watch out for wet surfaces or places that can pose a threat of slipping. Carelessness can cost you a sprained ankle, a damaged tendon or even a fracture.

Keep your feet clean and dry: Closed shoes, thick socks, and heated places are sure to make your feet sweaty, exposing them to the risk of fungal and bacterial infections. Wash your feet daily and keep them dry. Switch shoes and keep extra pairs of socks so that you can change frequently. Take off wet shoes as soon as possible.

Keep your feet warm. Warmth is important to avoid frostbite if you’re outside for too long.

Don’t burden your feet: With the holiday feasts means that one is very likely to gain extra pounds. Watch your weight as it can put extra burden on your feet.

Massage your feet. This increases circulation and relieves tension. You may use lotion to take care of moisturizing at the same time.

Keep the skin of your feet supple. Apply moisturizing lotion. If you have diabetes, do not put lotion in between the toes.

Give your feet a break. A full day of shopping keeps you on your feet on hard surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, and hardwood floors. Take a break every couple of hours to rejuvenate your feet.

Get help. Your feet should not hurt all the time. If you experience pain, swelling, or other signs of potential problems, see us for a quick evaluation.
