New Northeast Naples location Coming Soon!

By Dr. Cody Togher, Family Foot & Leg Center

For many of my patients here in Naples, a bunion is much more than a “bump” on the side of the foot that makes shoes fit poorly. It is a progressive deformity that dictates their entire lifestyle. I see patients every day who have stopped walking the Gulf beaches, given up their morning tennis matches, or transitioned into orthopedic shoes they despise, all because of chronic pain.

Historically, the word “surgery” for bunions carried a heavy stigma: long recovery times, months on crutches, and the permanent presence of metal screws. However, we have entered a new era of podiatric medicine. At Family Foot & Leg Center, I am increasingly moving toward Minimally Invasive Bunionectomy (MICA) paired with Bio-Integrative implants.

Here are the six primary reasons why my patients are choosing this modern path over traditional methods.

1. Smaller Incisions and Reduced Tissue Trauma

Traditional bunion surgery often requires a 5-centimeter to 10-centimeter incision. This “open” approach necessitates cutting through significant layers of skin and moving tendons aside to reach the bone. In contrast, the minimally invasive technique I utilize involves “keyhole” incisions, often less than a centimeter long.

By using specialized micro-instruments, I can realign the bone with surgical precision while leaving the surrounding soft tissues virtually undisturbed. For you, this means significantly less post-operative bruising and swelling. Because we aren’t “stripping” the tissue away from the bone, the blood supply remains intact, which is a critical factor in how quickly you heal.

2. Bio-Integrative Implants: Technology That Works With Your Biology

One of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve seen in my career is the shift from permanent metal hardware to Bio-Integrative implants. In the past, we used stainless steel or titanium screws to hold the bone in place. While effective, these metal pieces stay in your foot forever and can sometimes cause irritation, cold sensitivity, or require a second surgery to remove them.

Bio-Integrative implants are engineered from materials that provide the rigid stability needed for the bone to heal, but then they do something remarkable: they slowly integrate into your own bone tissue. Over time, the implant is essentially replaced by your body’s natural bone. This reduces the risk of long-term hardware complications and supports a more “natural” foot structure once the healing process is complete.

3. Rapid Recovery and Early Weight-Bearing

The question I get most often is, “How long will I be off my feet?” With traditional surgery, the answer was often weeks of non-weight-bearing. For an active Naples resident, that is a lifetime.

Because the minimally invasive approach is so stable, many of my patients are able to bear weight in a specialized surgical shoe within just a few days—sometimes even the same day as the procedure. We are often looking at a timeline where patients return to sneakers and light activity in a matter of weeks, rather than the three to four months associated with older techniques.

4. The Convenience of Outpatient Care

At Family Foot & Leg Center, we value your time and comfort. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. You arrive at the surgical center, we perform the correction—typically under local or regional anesthesia with some light sedation—and you go home the same afternoon to recover in your own bed.

This avoids the stress and cost of a hospital stay. By utilizing regional nerve blocks, we can also ensure that you are comfortable during those first critical hours after the procedure, often reducing the need for heavy narcotic pain medication.

5. Superior Cosmetic Results (Minimal Scarring)

While our primary goal is always function and pain relief, the aesthetic outcome is a very close second. Many patients feel self-conscious about their bunions and, subsequently, the large scars left by traditional surgeries.

Because we use tiny “keyhole” portals, the scarring is often nearly invisible once fully healed. If you want to get back into sandals or open-toed shoes for a night out at 5th Avenue South, you can do so with confidence, knowing your foot looks as good as it feels.

6. Consistently Positive Patient Outcomes

The clinical data—and more importantly, the feedback I hear in my exam rooms—is incredibly encouraging. Patients are reporting a much higher “satisfaction score” because the barrier to entry for surgery has been lowered. They no longer have to fear a grueling recovery.

I’ve watched patients go from hobbling in pain to walking three miles a day within a fraction of the time I saw a decade ago. The combination of less trauma and smarter implants is truly a game-changer.

Is This Right for You?

Every foot is unique. While minimally invasive surgery is a fantastic tool, your candidacy depends on the severity of your bunion, your bone density, and your overall health. If you are tired of “managing” your foot pain and are ready to explore a modern solution, I invite you to visit us at Family Foot & Leg Center.
