As the breeze softens and the bougainvillea begins to bloom here in Port Charlotte, we all feel that familiar pull to get back outside. Spring in Southwest Florida is a spectacular time, but for many of my patients at Family Foot & Leg Center, it is also a season of transition that can be surprisingly hard on the feet. After months of perhaps being a bit more sedentary or wearing enclosed shoes, the sudden shift to sandals and increased activity can lead to a host of preventable issues.
My goal is always to keep you walking comfortably. Whether you are hitting the pickleball courts, walking the Harborwalk, or finally getting back into the garden, your feet are the foundation of those activities. To ensure your spring remains pain-free, there are several key areas of care we should focus on as the thermometer rises.
The Transition from Boots to Sandals
While we don’t deal with heavy winter boots in Port Charlotte, many of us do switch from supportive sneakers or loafers to flip-flops and sandals the moment the humidity ticks up. This sudden change in support is one of the leading causes of heel pain, specifically plantar fasciitis, during the spring months.
Most standard flip-flops offer no arch support and zero shock absorption. When you spend the day walking on flat, unsupportive soles, the thick band of tissue on the bottom of your foot – the plantar fascia – stretches and develops tiny tears. If you wake up with a sharp, stabbing pain in your heel during your first few steps of the day, your footwear is likely the culprit. I always recommend looking for sandals with a molded footbed or builit-in arch support. If you can bend a sandal in half, it isn’t providing the structural integrity your foot needs for a day at the beach or the local farmer’s market.
Hydration and Skin Integrity
The Florida sun is famously unforgiving, and our feet often bear the burnt of it. As we transition into
In my practice, I often see these cracks become more than just a cosmetic nuisance; they can become gateways for bacteria, leading to infections – a particular concern for my diabetic patients. To combat this, I suggest a dedicated nightly routine. Applying a high-quality urea-based cream before bed can help break down thickened skin and lock in moisture. However, a word of caution: avoid applying lotion between your toes. The humid Florida climate already creates a moist environment in those tight spaces, and adding extra lotion can encourage the growth of fungal infections like athlete’s foot.
Sun Protection for the Often-Forgotten
We are usually very diligent about applying sunscreen to our shoulders, faces, and arms, but the tops of the feet are frequently overlooked. This area has very thin skin and is highly susceptible to sunburn, especially when you are out on a boat or sitting by the pool.
Beyond the immediate pain of a burn, the tops of the feet are a common site for skin cancers, including melanoma. When you are applying your SPF 30 or higher this spring, make sure you cover the entire foot, including the tops and the skin around the ankles. If you notice any new or changing spots on your feet – moles that are irregular in shape or color 00 it is vital to have them evaluated by a specialist immediately.
Avoiding the “Weekend Warrior: Trap
Spring often inspires a surge in physical activity. While I love seeing my patients active, I frequently treat “weekend warrior” injuries this time of year. If you haven’t been running or playing tennis regularly over
Conditions like Achilles tendinitis and stress fractures are common results of doing too much, too soon. The Achilles tendon, which connects your calf muscle to your heel bone, can become inflamed if pushed too hard without a proper warm-up. I encourage a “slow and steady” approach: gradually increase your activity duration and intensity by no more than 10% each week. Listen to your body; if your feet telling you to rest and ice the area before a minor strain becomes a major tear.
Professional Care and Prevention
Ultimately, the best way to handle spring foot issues is to address them before they start. If you have noticed thickened, discolored nails, persistent itching, or a change in the way you walk, spring is the perfect time for a “foot tune-up.” At Family Foot & Leg Center, we use advanced diagnostics and treatments – from custom orthotics that fit your favorite shoes to specialized wound care – to ensure you stay mobile.
