The greatest fear in bunion surgery usually comes from a story — someone who knows someone who heard that bunion surgery was “the worst pain ever.” In the past, foot surgery could be painful. With the Lam Modified bunionectomy and a deliberate pain-control protocol, that is no longer the case. The video below shows the difference between this approach and traditional methods.

Why It Hurts Less: A Multi-Pronged Protocol

Reducing — or even eliminating — post-operative pain is not luck. It is a deliberate, layered plan:

  1. Preoperative IV or oral NSAIDs, barring allergies and kidney issues
  2. Preoperative nerve block, in addition to whatever sedation or general anesthesia is used
  3. Careful incision planning
  4. Gentle soft-tissue handling to minimize trauma and collateral damage
  5. Meticulous tissue closure to minimize bleeding
  6. A long-acting anesthetic that can provide up to eight hours of numbness after surgery
  7. A post-operative steroid injection to reduce inflammation
  8. Post-operative pain medication

The result: most of our patients report a pain score of just 0 to 3 out of 10 at their first post-operative visit.

The Minimally Invasive Advantage

Less pain also comes from the technique itself. Because the Lam Modified bunionectomy corrects the deformity through tiny incisions rather than a long open cut, there is less soft-tissue trauma, less swelling, and a faster return to walking — and it can be done in the office under local anesthesia.

If fear of pain has kept you from addressing a painful bunion, this is the conversation worth having.
