When the joint at the base of the big toe is extremely stiff or inflexible, the condition is called hallux limitus/rigidus. If the toe is unable to fully bend but still has some degree of movement, the condition is called hallux limitus. If the joint at the base of the big toe is unable to move at all, this is termed hallux rigidus.

Signs and Symptoms

Diagnosis

Physical examination and x-ray of the foot is done to confirm the diagnosis of hallux limitus and hallux rigidus. The most common finding is limitation of dorsiflexion and pain. Osteophytes may be palpable.

Treatment

Hallux limitus / rigidus is a progressive, destructive condition. Treatment depends on the stage of progression and extent of damage.
