A calcaneal fracture is a break in the heel bone. Most calcaneal fractures result from trauma, such as falls from a ladder or automobile accidents wherein the heel is crushed. Jumping onto hard surfaces, blunt trauma, penetrating trauma, and twisting events may also cause the injury. Others are due to repetitive stress or overuse such as running. This is a potentially debilitating injury due to pain and chronic stiffness, in addition to hindfoot deformities.

Clinical presentation

Routine evaluation of calcaneal fractures start with standard foot x-rays.
CT scan is the modality of choice to evaluate heel fracture. This shows the extent of the fracture and hematoma along the sole of the foot.

At FFLC, we have CurveBeam 3D imaging, for an improved CT foot and ankle analysis. This allows for improved diagnostic information and better patient outcomes.
