Cutting your own toenails seems simple — but for some patients it is genuinely dangerous. If you have certain medical conditions, a single accidental nick can lead to bleeding, a wound that won’t heal, and a serious infection. Here is when you should let a podiatrist handle nail and callus care, and why insurance usually covers it.
If You Take a Blood Thinner
If you are on blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin), Plavix, Xarelto, Eliquis, Lovenox, Aggrenox, or heparin, Medicare and most insurance will pay for your nails and calluses to be professionally cut about every nine weeks. The reason is simple: an accidental cut while trimming can bleed heavily and become an entry point for infection.
Other Patients Who Should Not Cut Their Own Nails
- Diabetics — should always have a podiatric foot check rather than risk a cut they may not feel
- Kidney disease — higher infection and healing risk
- Peripheral neuropathy or poor circulation — reduced sensation and blood flow
- Low back pain or limited mobility — if you cannot safely reach or see the bottoms of your feet
- Immunocompromised patients — those on chemotherapy, other cancer treatments, or immune-suppressing medications
Prevention Is the Goal
For these patients, professional nail care is not a luxury — it is how we prevent the ulcers, infections, hospitalizations, and amputations that can start with one small cut. Each visit is also a chance to inspect your feet for sores, pressure points, and circulation problems before they become serious. When in doubt, check us out.
We’re Here to Keep Your Feet Safe
