Southwest Florida’s rainy season and year-round humidity create the perfect breeding ground for fungus on your feet. Warm, damp shoes and socks — especially after stepping in a puddle — let athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) and other fungal infections take hold. Here are five things you need to know to keep your feet healthy through the wet months.

5 Rainy-Season Foot Tips

  1. Air out your shoes and socks. Don’t keep wet footwear on — change as soon as you can if you step in a puddle.
  2. Watch for the warning signs. Dry, scaling skin, cracks between the toes, itching, or odor mean it’s time to see your podiatrist.
  3. Diabetics, don’t wait. Any redness or cracks in the feet need prompt attention to avoid infection — and, in worst cases, amputation.
  4. Rotate your shoes. Keep at least two pairs and alternate daily so each can fully dry out; humidity and wet weather feed fungi.
  5. Use a daily foot powder. Baby powder or an antifungal foot powder between the toes helps keep sweat — and fungus — under control.

Why Athlete’s Foot Is More Than an Itch

Athlete’s foot causes itching, burning, peeling, and cracking, usually starting between the toes. Left untreated, those tiny skin cracks become an open door for bacteria. A simple fungal infection can become a bacterial cellulitis — a spreading, sometimes serious skin infection that occasionally requires IV antibiotics. The fungus can also spread to the toenails, where it is much harder to treat.

When to See a Podiatrist

If over-the-counter creams aren’t clearing the problem, the skin is cracking or weeping, or you have diabetes or poor circulation, have your feet evaluated. We can confirm the diagnosis, prescribe more effective treatment, and help you prevent the next flare.
