What Is a Tailor’s Bunion (Bunionette)?
A tailor’s bunion is a bony bump on the outside of the foot, at the base of the little (fifth) toe — the mirror image of a regular bunion. The name dates to tailors who sat cross-legged, putting pressure on the outer edge of the foot. It forms when the fifth metatarsal drifts outward, and like a standard bunion it can become red, swollen, and painful against the side of a shoe.
How a Standard Bunion Differs
A standard bunion (hallux abductovalgus) forms at the big-toe joint, where the first metatarsal drifts inward and the big toe leans toward the others. Many patients actually have both deformities on the same foot, which is why we evaluate the whole forefoot rather than a single bump.
Minimally Invasive Correction for Both
Whether the bump is on the big-toe side or the little-toe side, the minimally invasive technique corrects it through tiny incisions:
- Little to no visible scar
- Less pain and swelling than traditional open surgery
- Often performed in the office under local anesthesia
- A quicker return to comfortable shoes
Non-surgical measures — wider shoes, padding, and orthotics — can ease symptoms, but a painful, progressing bunion or bunionette usually needs correction to resolve. A weight-bearing X-ray tells us the size of the deformity and the right procedure.
