What causes an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and — if left untreated — infection. Common causes

• Cutting toenails too short or rounding the corners instead of cutting straight across
• Tight, narrow, or ill-fitting shoes
• Trauma to the toe (stubbing, dropping something on it, repetitive sports impact)
• Naturally curved or thick nails (often genetic)
• Fungal nail infections that distort nail growth

When to see a podiatrist

Mild cases can sometimes be managed at home with warm soaks. But if you notice increasing redness, pus or drainage, warmth, red streaking, or you have diabetes or poor circulation, it’s time to come in — ingrown toenails can progress to serious infections quickly, especially in diabetic patients.

• In-office partial nail avulsion — the ingrown portion of the nail is numbed and removed, providing immediate relief
• Matrixectomy — for recurring ingrown nails, a small portion of the nail root is treated to prevent regrowth in that area
• Infection management with topical or oral antibiotics when needed
• Fungal nail treatment when fungus is a contributing factor
