There are many ways to fix a flat foot — and the best choice depends as much on the patient’s life as on the X-ray. This case is a good example. The patient is older and lives alone, so 12 weeks of non-weight-bearing in a cast after a triple arthrodesis (a major bone fusion) simply was not a safe or practical option for her.
Choosing an Implant Over a Fusion
Instead of a long, immobilizing reconstruction, we discussed the HyProCure implant — a small stent placed in the sinus tarsi to realign the ankle bone over the heel bone and restore the arch. For this patient it allowed a much quicker recovery and weight-bearing, and the result was excellent: the arch was restored and she is now ready to have the opposite foot done.
Why Recovery and Lifestyle Matter
A successful surgery is not just about correcting the deformity — it is about choosing a procedure the patient can actually recover from. For someone who lives alone or cannot stay off the foot for months, a minimally invasive implant can be the difference between a good outcome and no surgery at all.
The Keys to a Good Implant Result
- Proper release of the ligaments in the subtalar joint so the bones realign correctly
- Accurate sizing of the implant for the individual foot
- An experienced surgeon who performs these procedures routinely
If a flatfoot is causing pain and you are worried about a long recovery, ask whether a minimally invasive option fits your situation.
