Living with ankle arthritis? Arthroscopic ankle fusion may be the answer — even for patients for whom open ankle fusion or an ankle implant is not an option. In our experience, older patients have achieved pain-free walking roughly eight weeks after this minimally invasive procedure.

What Is Ankle Arthritis?

Ankle arthritis occurs when the cartilage in the ankle joint wears down, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty moving. Everyday activities become challenging, and quality of life suffers. It most often follows an old fracture or injury (post-traumatic arthritis), but osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are also common causes.

What Is Ankle Fusion?

Ankle fusion, or arthrodesis, surgically unites the bones of the ankle joint. By stopping the painful motion of the worn-out joint, it provides a stable, strong, pain-free foundation. Done arthroscopically — through small keyhole incisions with a camera — it spares the soft tissue, which is why it can be offered to higher-risk and older patients who are not candidates for open surgery.

Benefits of Ankle Fusion

  1. Pain relief: dramatically reduces or eliminates chronic ankle pain
  2. Improved mobility: a stable ankle makes walking and standing easier
  3. Restored function: regain the ability to do tasks that had become difficult
  4. Long-lasting results: a durable solution that often lasts a lifetime

Is Ankle Fusion Right for You?

The only way to know is a consultation with a foot and ankle specialist who can review your imaging, weigh fusion against ankle replacement, and tailor the recommendation to your condition and activity level. We’re here to help you step forward with confidence.
