A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the joint at the base of the big toe. It develops when the first metatarsal bone turns outward and the big toe drifts toward the other toes, forcing the joint to jut out. What may start as minor pain progressively worsens, and over time the joint can become inflamed, stiff and painful.

Can a Bunion and Big Toe Arthritis Occur Together?

Yes. Arthritis and bunions frequently occur in the same joint, and each can make the other worse. A long-standing bunion changes how forces pass through the big-toe joint, and that abnormal wear accelerates cartilage breakdown — the hallmark of osteoarthritis (in the big toe this is called hallux rigidus). The reverse is also true: arthritis and inflammatory conditions can weaken the joint and contribute to bunion formation.

Diagnosis and Treatment

At Family Foot & Leg Center we evaluate the joint with a physical exam and in-office X-rays to measure both the bunion deformity and the degree of arthritis. Many patients improve without surgery using wider or stiff-soled shoes, custom orthotics, anti-inflammatory care and cortisone injections. When pain limits daily life, options range from a minimally invasive (scarless) bunionectomy to joint-preserving procedures or, for severe end-stage arthritis, joint fusion. We always recommend the least invasive option that delivers lasting relief.

Don’t Wait — Bunions Only Get Worse

A bunion will not resolve on its own and only worsens with age. The sooner your foot is evaluated, the more treatment options you have and the better your outcome. Call Dr. Kevin Lam’s office at (239) 430-3668 (FOOT) or visit NaplesPodiatrist.com.
