What are the causes of flat feet? Some people inherit the condition. Others develop it over time. There are certain factors that can increase the risk of developing flat feet over time such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, obesity, foot or ankle injuries, and aging.
In children, flat feet are first noticed by parents or often diagnosed by their pediatricians.
For children with significant foot pain, doctors may orders some tests such as x-rays to see bone images, Computed tomography scan, or Magnetic resonance imaging.
There are nonsurgical treatments for flat feet to relieve pain. These include
- Arch supports – available over the counter or custom-designed to mold perfectly to the feet.
- Stretching exercises – to stretch the Achilles tendon
- Medications – over-the-counter pain relievers to reduce pain and discomfort
- Supportive footwear – shoes with arch support instead of flip-flops or sandals
- Physical therapy
- Avoiding high-impact activities – allow the body to rest and recuperate, do low-impact activities such as swimming, biking, and walking instead of running and jumping
- Maintain weight – being overweight can add stress on the feetIn some cases, surgery may be needed to treat flat feet. The combination of procedures to repair the ligaments and tendons in the feet and correct bone deformities restore and support the arches.
