Sweaty Feet (Hyperhidrosis) Treatment in Naples & Southwest Florida

Feet that are constantly damp, slip inside your shoes, and leave an odor no matter how often you wash them? Excessively sweaty feet — medically called plantar hyperhidrosis — are more than an embarrassment; the constant moisture sets the stage for odor, fungus, and skin breakdown. At Family Foot & Leg Center our board-certified podiatric team offers real solutions beyond drugstore powders, at 9 Southwest Florida locations with same-day appointments available. Call (239) 430-3668 or book online now.

What Is Plantar Hyperhidrosis?

The soles of your feet carry one of the densest concentrations of sweat glands anywhere on the body. In hyperhidrosis, those glands are overactive — producing far more sweat than the body needs to regulate temperature. The most common type, primary focal hyperhidrosis, tends to run in families, often starts in childhood or the teens, and is not a sign of poor hygiene. It affects the soles (and frequently the palms) specifically, and it can be triggered by heat, exercise, and emotional stress. Less often, generalized sweating points to another medical cause worth ruling out.

Symptoms and Complications

Beyond the obvious dampness, patients notice feet that slip in sandals and shoes, socks that are soaked through, and white, wrinkled, macerated skin. The bigger issue is what the moisture invites: persistent foot odor from bacteria (bromhidrosis), recurrent athlete’s foot, fungal nails, plantar warts, blisters, and pitted keratolysis — small pits in the sole that add to odor. Controlling the sweat is often the missing piece in resolving these stubborn secondary problems.

Why Sweaty Feet Are Worse in Southwest Florida

Our climate is the toughest possible environment for hyperhidrosis. Year-round heat and high humidity mean feet rarely get a chance to dry out, closed shoes trap moisture, and the same warm dampness that bothers you is exactly what fungus and bacteria thrive in. It is why we see so many patients whose athlete’s foot or foot odor simply will not resolve until the underlying sweating is addressed.

An Important Caution for Diabetes and Poor Circulation

If you have diabetes, neuropathy, or poor circulation, chronically moist, macerated skin deserves professional attention. Softened, waterlogged skin breaks down more easily and is more prone to fungal and bacterial infection, and in a foot with reduced sensation or blood flow a minor skin breakdown between the toes can progress to an ulcer. These patients should have persistent moisture, athlete’s foot, or skin breakdown managed by a podiatrist rather than left to over-the-counter products alone.

Treatment at Family Foot & Leg Center

We treat sweating in a stepwise way and clean up its complications at the same time. The foundation is good moisture management: moisture-wicking socks changed through the day, breathable, rotated footwear, and a strong aluminum chloride antiperspirant applied to dry feet at night (often under occlusion for the first several nights) — far more effective than ordinary powders. When topical measures fall short, we offer iontophoresis, which uses a gentle electrical current through water to quiet the sweat glands, and botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, which can dramatically reduce sweating for months at a time. Throughout, we identify and treat any secondary athlete’s foot, fungal nails, warts, or pitted keratolysis so your feet are dry, comfortable, and healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes excessively sweaty feet?

Overactive sweat glands on the soles. The common form, primary focal hyperhidrosis, often runs in families and is worsened by heat, humidity, exercise, and stress. Occasionally another condition is responsible, so evaluation is worthwhile.

Why do sweaty feet smell?

Sweat is nearly odorless; the smell comes from bacteria breaking it down, plus fungus and pitted keratolysis that thrive in the dampness. Controlling moisture and bacteria together eliminates the odor.

How do I stop my feet from sweating?

Moisture-wicking socks, breathable rotated shoes, and a strong aluminum chloride antiperspirant at night. If those fall short, iontophoresis and Botox injections are highly effective in-office options.

Can Botox help sweaty feet?

Yes — Botox blocks the nerve signal to the sweat glands and can markedly reduce foot sweating for several months per treatment. It is one of the most effective options when antiperspirants are not enough.
