Dry Needling

Specialized Diabetic Foot & Wound Care

About

Dry needling is a treatment that physical therapist use for pain and movement issues associated with myofascial trigger points. With this technique, a physical therapist inserts thin needles into or near your trigger points. The needles stimulate your muscles, which causes them to contract or twitch. Dry needling is used in conjunction with stretches and exercises to assist muscle recovery and build strength.

How Dry Needling Works

Dry needling involves inserting a needle through the skin into the area of injury in order to stimulate a healing response in the area. The micro tears caused by the needle prompts the body’s natural defenses to get to work, bringing nutrient-rich blood to the site and boosting tissue repair. Dry needling also helps to dissipate inflammatory mediators, those substances that gather in an area of inflammation.

What to Expect

Rarely does this draw any blood or result in any serious pain. A local twitch response is a therapeutic response that serves as a sign that the needle has hit the trigger point, so it is in fact a good, desirable reaction. After treatment you may experience some residual soreness that may last for an hour to up to a few days. Plantar fasciitis, heel pain Ankle sprains Shin splints Myofascial pain syndrome Calf cramps Knee pain Neuropathic symptoms (constant numbness, burning and tingling sensation in feet) It is recommended to have a big glass of water following treatment to assist in your recovery.
