Plantar warts and calluses may look similar, but they require different treatments. Learn how to spot the difference and when to see a podiatrist for fast relief.
Plantar Warts vs. Calluses: How to Tell the Difference
February 6 2026
At first glance, plantar warts and calluses can look almost identical—but they are not the same condition. Knowing the difference matters, because treating the wrong one can lead to prolonged discomfort and delayed healing.
👣 What Is a Plantar Wart?
Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and typically develop on the bottom of the foot. Because they grow inward due to pressure from walking, they can become especially painful.
Common signs of plantar warts include:
- Pain when walking or standing
- A rough or grainy surface
- Tiny black dots (“seed-like” spots), which are actually small blood vessels
- Pain when squeezing the spot from side to side
👣 What Is a Callus?
Calluses form due to repeated friction or pressure, often from shoes that don’t fit properly, abnormal foot mechanics, or high-impact activity. They are the body’s way of protecting the skin.
Common signs of calluses include:
- Thickened, hardened skin
- Yellowish or dull appearance
- Mild discomfort or tenderness
- Typically not painful when squeezed from the sides
Why Proper Diagnosis Matters
Because plantar warts are viral, they require different treatment than calluses. Calluses often improve with offloading pressure, shoe changes, and proper foot care—while warts may spread or worsen if left untreated.
Treating a wart like a callus (or vice versa) can delay relief and keep you uncomfortable longer than necessary.
When to See a Podiatrist
If the spot on your foot:
- isn’t improving
- is becoming painful
- keeps coming back
- or is interfering with walking
…it’s time to get it evaluated. A quick exam can make all the difference.
