Did You Know Your Footprint Reveals Your Arch Type?

July 1 2025

Understanding Your Arch Is the First Step to Solving Foot, Knee, Hip, and Back Pain!

When you look at your footprint, you’re seeing more than just a shape—you’re getting clues about how your body moves, how your weight is distributed, and even why you might be experiencing pain in places you didn’t expect—like your knees, hips, or lower back.

At Family Foot & Leg Center, we often begin treatment by examining your arch type. Here’s what your footprint might be telling you:

1. Flat Arch (Pes Planus)

If your footprint shows almost the entire bottom of your foot, you likely have a flat arch.
🛑 Common issues:

  • Overpronation (rolling inward)
  • Heel and arch pain (especially plantar fasciitis)
  • Knee or hip discomfort due to poor alignment

👟 Solution: Custom orthotics, arch support, and strengthening exercises.

2. Normal Arch

A footprint with a moderate curve indicates a normal arch. This is considered biomechanically efficient.
✅ Typical issues:

  • May still experience discomfort from high-impact activities or improper footwear
👟 Solution: Supportive shoes, stretching, and periodic checkups for alignment.

3. High Arch (Pes Cavus)

If your footprint shows only your heel and the ball of your foot, you likely have a high arch.
🛑 Common issues:

  • Poor shock absorption
  • Heel, ball-of-foot, or toe pain
  • Greater risk of stress fractures or ankle sprains

👟 Solution: Cushioned footwear, orthotics, and gait analysis to correct instability.
