Tips to Control Foot Odor and Foot Fungus

Summer is fast approaching and if you live in SWFL you will notice the humidity.   We are seeing more cases of athlete’s feet, AKA tinea pedis, AKA fungal infection of the feet / toe/ nails.

There are some ways you can avoid or take control of the condition.

  • Spray your shoes / sandals with Lysol and allow to air for 24 hours, also alternate shoes, sandals
  • If you sweat a lot, use antifungal foot powder or spray to keep odor and fungus at bay
  • Don’t share shoes
  • Wash socks in color safe bleach
  • Do not wear wet shoes! Dry them out completely before wearing
  • Keep your feet dry, especially between your toes.
  • Applying antifungal talcum powder to the feet can help.
  • Go barefoot to let your feet air out as much as possible when you’re home.
  • Dry completely between your toes after a bath or shower.
  • Protect your feet in public places.
  • Pay attention to between your toes,   toe jam = dead tissue that can be a breeding ground for fungus

Fungus is a tiny organism that lives off your skin cells. When the environment they live in gets warm and moist, they grow out of control and start to cause symptoms. Infections start with mild itching, scaling of the feet. Worsening infections can lead to bleeding, pain and severe odor. Once there is a crack in your skin, the skin is open for bacteria to enter and cause bacterial  infection called cellulitis.

It’s usually on the soles of the feet, the areas between the toes, and sometimes the toenails. When the toenails are involved they become thick, white or yellowish, and brittle.

Diabetics, people with peripheral neuropathy or PAD (peripheral arterial disease) should not try to treat themselves.

When all else fails see your podiatrist as soon as possible to prevent further complications.
